Since the Clarion Woodwind Quintet came as faculty to the North Carolina School of the Arts at its founding in 1965, bassoonist Mark Popkin has sought to expand and enhance the repertoire for woodwinds by transcribing or arranging attractive works by great composers who never got around to writing for small wind groups. Much of his work has been published by Theodore Presser, Alry Publications, and others, and recorded by the Clarion Quintet. Larger settings of works such as Wagner's Siegfried Idyll are popular on wind concerts. Besides presenting a fresh look at great pieces of music to the audience, Popkin's transcriptions give students and more seasoned performers alike an opportunity to become more intimately acquainted with the music and style of composers whose orchestral works they will be playing.
The Debussy Quartet, Op.10 and the Ravel Quartet are landmarks of the string quartet repertoire. Mark Popkin's arrangements are challenging but rewarding to play. We were founding members OpusFive, the faculty woodwind quintet of Wake Forest University from 1996 - 2002, when the group premiered both arrangements during concerts at the university.
